Who Decides If A Movie Is A Classic?

Is it a close-kept secret? Maybe there is a special movie ranking machine that select which movies get to be a classic? I don’t know, but that seems too much like ‘the Jetsons’ age. All this technology moving us in that direction is a little bit too impersonal for me. Maybe humans need that human element not to feel so over-controlled by all this technology in the world. What is considered classic? Handing that task over to some machine with that human element to tell me what I want as a classic doesn’t feel quite right. Since I don’t know how the industry classifies a movie as a classic, I decide for myself what is a classic for me and share my own beliefs on why its a classic for me:

To Be, Or Not To Be A Classic

A movie has to do more than just connect me to the story to hold my interest. It has to be powerful enough to bring forth strong emotions such as in movies like Gandhi (1982) or Titanic (1998). Movies like that will surely get you all wrapped up in what’s going on and hold your interest. When you are so engrossed in what you are watching you don’t hear whoever is calling you. They are like a fly buzzing in the background because you are really into the movie. Some people will not allow themselves to go deep or get that sucked in because it’s giving up self-control. Maybe it is all some form of Television Hypnosis. HANAN PARVEZ wrote an article entitled “How Television Influences Your Mind Through Hypnosis.” He explained how our mind slips into a “Hypnosis trance state” within seconds of watching TV. Check out that image to bring home his point. The TV has a chain on the man, and the TV says to the man: “Sit! I told you no reading and thinking for yourself.” Whoa! Scary, right? I think I am having second thoughts about all these movies I’m watching.😂 In truth, we do have to be more selective with what we put into our subconscious and need to turn off the TV and do more reading. Parents protect your children I don’t have to remind you about their minds are like a sponge the first five years of their life. Sitting them in front of unsupervised TV, “is like garbage in, garbage out.” Read to them and give them books to read instead of letting the TV babysit and entertain them. Trash in, trash out!

Awaking Deep Emotions

Some movies are great at awaking our innermost feelings, and you know the type: Movies that make you sad and teary-eyed, and weepy; or when you find yourself excited, almost jumping out of your seat; or flinching or ducking, or pulling the covers over your face if something is about the happen or someone is about to be cut or hurt. You may even find yourself talking or yelling with excitement at the TV characters in the movies–like some people do when watching a basketball or football game.

Emotionally Drained After A Movie

When I watch a great classic like Titanic (1998), it is just hard to re-watch it soon after, because movies like that are so emotionally draining. (Movies that make me cry, yell, or scream I love but can’t watch it back-to-back. Don’t get me wrong, Titanic (1998) was an excellent movie, in my book it is definitely classic material, but a perfect example of the emotional effect movies can have on us. Personally, I would need time to emotionally regenerate before I could rewatch Powerful movies like Titanic so soon. If movies can be that emotionally draining it makes me wonder how deep these movies are affecting our Psyche. 🤔
